What conditions can physiotherapy help with?

Physiotherapy may be used in the management and rehabilitation of many movement and musculoskeletal problems.

Examples may include back and neck problems, joint and muscle conditions, sports injuries, post-operative rehabilitation and selected neurological conditions.

Suitability should be determined after an appropriate individual assessment.

What should I bring for my first appointment?

If relevant, bring previous medical reports, investigation reports, prescriptions, discharge summaries or other documents related to your current condition.

Wear comfortable clothing that allows the affected body area to be assessed and moved appropriately.

Will physiotherapy be painful?

Physiotherapy does not necessarily have to be painful. Treatment intensity should be selected according to the individual's condition, symptoms and tolerance.

Some exercises or techniques may produce temporary discomfort, but significant or unexpected pain should be communicated to the physiotherapist.

How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies from person to person. It can depend on the condition, severity, functional limitations, response to treatment and rehabilitation goals.

A suitable plan can be discussed after assessment and progress can be reviewed during follow-up.

Can I do exercises at home?

Home exercises may form an important part of rehabilitation when they are appropriate for the individual's condition.

Exercises should be selected and progressed appropriately rather than relying on a general exercise programme.

Can physiotherapy replace surgery or medication?

Physiotherapy should not automatically be considered a replacement for surgery, medication or other medical treatment.

Depending on the condition, physiotherapy may be used independently or alongside other healthcare interventions.

Decisions about medication or surgery should be made with the appropriate medical professional.
